The third hundred Fry words are the ‘instant words‘ that should be master by third grade. ‘Instant words‘ are the most used words in reading and writing. These high frequency words should be instantly recognized by sight in order to build up your students reading fluency.
Have your children practice read and memorize these sight words to help them on their literacy journey. It is also important for readers to practice words in meaningful context through sentence reading and writing practice.
The top 300 Fry words are the building blocks for reading and speech for young students. These are the words like ‘own’, ‘example’, ‘above’, ‘talk’, and so on. They are usually small, and easily recognized, and the spelling of these words is not always straightforward in regard to how they sound.
The worksheet below is broken down into four groups to easily introduce and assess your students progress. We also have sight word worksheets which are similar, but based on Dolce words. Fry words are a more recent and extensive list of ‘instant words’, than Dolce words. The two lists of words are similar, because the lists are both considered high-frequency words, that should be master for improved reading fluency.
